Cape Coast Day Tour

Full Day Departure: Accra, Ghana From: $160/person
Guests at the entrance to the Kakum canopy walkway

Above the Forest, Then Into the Castle.

A day that holds two very different things. In the morning you walk the Kakum canopy walkway, suspended above the rainforest floor with the canopy stretching out around you. In the afternoon you stand inside Cape Coast Castle, a former slave fort, and hear what happened there.

Afterwards a speed boat takes you across to Elmina, where the fishing fleet works as it has for generations, and the day ends with lunch at a beach resort.

Good to Know

  1. The Kakum canopy walkway runs more than 350 metres above the forest floor.
  2. Cape Coast Castle was built in 1653 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  3. Elmina is one of the oldest European settlements in sub-Saharan Africa, founded in 1482.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers.

How is this different from the Ancestral Tour?
This day is Kakum, the castle and Elmina. The Ancestral Tour begins at Assin Manso and the Slave River instead, and spends the day on that history rather than the forest.
Is the canopy walk difficult?
There is a walk uphill to reach it, and the walkway itself sways. If you are unsure about heights, tell your host and you can enjoy the forest floor instead.
How long is the drive from Accra?
Around three hours each way, so we leave early. The road is good and we stop when you need to.
Are entrance fees included?
Yes. Kakum, Cape Coast Castle and the boat to Elmina are all covered, along with taxes. Lunch is at your own expense.
Is the castle emotionally heavy?
It can be. Your host gives you the history before you go in and leaves you room afterwards, for as long as you need.
What should I bring?
Comfortable walking shoes for the canopy walk, light layers, water and a camera. Out of respect, no flash photography inside the castle dungeons.
