Volta Community Tour

Full Day Departure: Accra, Ghana From: $230/person
A traveler enjoying her time at the Wli waterfalls

The Volta Region, From the Inside.

This day steps off the usual route. You cross the Adome Bridge and spend time with families in a Volta community: walking their farms, meeting palm wine producers, and watching how akpeteshie is distilled from the sap.

You will see palm oil pressed and cocoa picked from the pod, and talk to the people who do it. The day ends at Wli Waterfalls, the highest in Ghana.

Good to Know

  1. Akpeteshie is distilled from fermented palm wine and was banned under colonial rule.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers.

How is this different from the Volta Day Tour?
The Volta Day Tour is the sights: Mount Gemi, the monkey sanctuary and Wli. This one is the people: farms, palm wine, distilling and cocoa, with Wli at the end.
Is the palm wine tasting included?
Yes. Tasting the palm wine and the akpeteshie is part of the day. Anything you want to buy and take home is not.
How long is the drive?
Four to five hours each way, so we leave Accra very early to make the most of the daylight.
Is there a hike to the waterfall?
About thirty minutes on a forest path to the lower falls. Regular fitness is fine, and it can be slippery in the wet season.
Can I buy from the farmers?
Yes, and it is welcome. Anything you buy is between you and them, and is not part of the tour price.
What should I bring?
Walking shoes, a light rain jacket, sun protection and cash for anything you want to buy from the producers.
